Press Release

HUNTSVILLE, ONTARIO – August 9, 2000 -- Deerhurst Resort, a century-old landmark in Muskoka, has launched a proud new chapter in its history with the opening of a major expansion. At a cost of over $18 million (Canadian), the enlarged all-season facilities have made what was already one of Ontario’s largest conference and leisure destinations even larger, adding state-of-the-art guest rooms, a waterview restaurant, gorgeous lobby, majestic ballroom and a stunning new indoor pool.

Guests arriving at Deerhurst Resort will now be welcomed in warm Muskoka style by a magnificent three story lobby that features rockery stone columns, luxurious furnishings, slate flooring and a double-sided, floor-to-ceiling fireplace.  A comfortable lounge, located just off the lobby, features an awe-inspiring 52 foot long hand-painted historical map of the region.

"Although it’s only been a short time since we began welcoming people to the new Deerhurst Resort, the positive response from our guests has been absolutely overwhelming." says Patricia Nicholl, Director of Sales and Marketing. "Our goal, from day one of the planning, has been to take the legendary reputation of Deerhurst Resort to new levels and to create a centerpiece for a unique resort experience. Judging by initial reactions, we’ve more than met our goals."

In early April,  a new restaurant will open and is destined to become the jewel of Deerhurst Resort’s choice of dining options. Located a short walk from the lobby, the new restaurant provides a sumptuous visual feast with its panoramic views of the water. Natural materials pay tribute to the rustic origins of Muskoka architecture with wrought iron chandeliers, marquetry floors, cherry wood furniture and massive Douglas Fir columns and beams. Outside, a Georgian-style, wrap-around, open-air porch provides an ideal spot for summertime dining.

To address the needs of 21st century business groups, Deerhurst Resort has increased the amount of space available for business meetings, conferences, exhibits and special events. The Waterhouse Ballroom, a grand new, 8,000 square foot, sub dividable ballroom, provides an air of elegance with its rich decor and a flair for the dramatic with a state-of-the-art, built-in 20 foot by

7 ½ foot rear projection screen. In the renovated Peninsula Room, spectacular views through massive windows provide a majestic backdrop while the new Rotunda affords business functions with the type of dazzling vistas that have enraptured visitors for generations.

Three new meeting rooms bring the total to 14 in the Pavilion alone, and 32 throughout the resort. A separate group check-in area will allow conference guests to register quickly so that they can get down to business and also get down to enjoying the relaxed elegance and vast recreational possibilities that are a popular choice of Deerhurst Resort guests.

A new four-story guest wing, embellished with an octagonal tower and decorative gables, envelopes guests in warmth, charm and comfort. Featuring large windows, elegant fabrics, custom-designed desks and separate voice and data lines, the 102 new rooms and suites are a place to relax, entertain or stay in touch with the rest of the business world.

Deerhurst Resort’s new indoor swimming pool, located near the spa, is sure to be a popular spot for families and features a five-sided, three story, post and beam solarium enclosure with expansive windows. The main crescent-shaped pool area also includes a separate whirlpool and children’s wading pool.

"We know that we’ve vastly improved a legendary resort, created scores of new employment opportunities and are showing that this area will continue to flourish as a year-round business and leisure destination", concludes Patricia Nicholl.
